So one of the things I’m doing for my job is writing up some of the curriculum suggestions Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS) make for comprehensive sexuality+ educaiton.
Today I was typing up their suggestions for what to teach 12-15 year olds about gender identity, and I felt totally affirmed by what they wrote, and thought you all might like to read...

Anonymous asked: what people in your life were the most supportive of your transition? do you feel that there were people you couldn't have done it without? or would you have been fine transitioning without any support system?
i don't have the support of my parents and i'm trying to think who can i turn to or, will i be ok on my own?

Anonymous asked: To gain access to hormones, do you need to see a therapist specifically trained to deal with trans people or can you get the necessary letter from any therapist?
busybeingacapsicle asked: Hey Sebastian, I'm just wondering how long after you started T you got chest surgery?
Here in South Australia it has to be one year after starting T, which I think is BS. I would rather be getting chest surgery first, then going on T.
I don't want to go through a whole year of binding when I really hate to bind.

Anonymous asked: do you know any resources for stealth transmen? i transitioned a while ago but am trying to live stealth. i would also be itnerested in reading about stealth men's experiences if there is such a thing out there. are there any forums for stealth transmen or anything? i like tumblr, but its trans comm isn't fitting my needs.

Anonymous asked: hey, sebastian! i'm kolby. i'm 14 and came out to my family last week. things are going pretty well. the only problem is that i live in rural wisconsin, and i can't find a gender therapist anywhere near me. is there some kind of listing online that i could look at? thanks!!
Anonymous asked: i've previously identified as a lesbian. i have a HUGE crush on my friend who is ftm. he's amazing and sweet and smart and strong. i don't want him to think i think of him as feminine but i also want to tell him i've got a crazy crush on him.
canyoubesure asked: Hey Sebastian! Forgive me if you've addressed this previously. I'm working on building up the infrastructure of this social service agency I work for, and part of that is writing/editing the forms that we have people fill out. I want to make sure we're inclusive, and one of the ways we can be inclusive is adding additional options when we ask about gender. When I've had this...
Anonymous asked: i am kinda ashamed of this question, so i'm gonna ask as anon.
lately, i have had a really crushing desire to live stealth. but i feel like if i did this, i would be denying my past and forsaking those in the community who work so hard to bring awareness and equality. is there any way to reconcile the two??

Question Answering Session tonight!
Hey guys- I’ve been swamped with my real job and moving but I’m settled and have set aside some time after work to answer a bunch of questions tonight. I’ll try and space out the posts so dashboard’s aren’t filled, but I wanted everyone to know that I am going to get to them! I’ve gotten some great Qs in the past couple of weeks and I’d hate to have you...

Talking about a loved one who has transitioned
It has been my experience that coming out to people from my past as transgender is way simpler than my parents coming out as having a kid who transitioned.
For one thing, it is pretty easy to tell I have transitioned. I am presenting as male, I have a new name, all my “sex” and “gender” indicators on social networking websites are listed as male. So anyone from my...

Anonymous asked: What are you thoughts on how fast to come out?
I ask this for two reasons - first of all, I noticed from your transition timeline that you seem to have gone fairly quickly from the "realization" period to the "coming out" period. I don't think this is a bad thing, but it seems like other transmen take a fairly long time in this period.

Anonymous asked: Hi Sebastian. I follow your blog and have found it very informative. I have a friend who started transitioning about a year ago, but recently it seems like he is trying to assert his male identity in a way that has become increasingly sexist. I don't want to offend him or suggest that his "masculinity" (his word) is invalid, but sometimes he makes statements that are pretty...

Anonymous asked: Sebastian - your blog here has been such a helpful and fantastic resource throughout my gender journey this past year. I recall you mentioning a few times that when you started your own gender journey you sort of came from a place of first just realizing that you were not a woman and then had a period of time in which you identified as genderqueer before realizing your true identity as male....

An Interview with Antony Hegarty
lazz:
GROSS: I’d like to talk with you a little bit about gender. You describe yourself as transgender. What does that mean to you?
HEGARTY: Well, you know, it’s pretty simple. I don’t identify as a man. I identify as transgender, you know? I mean, it’s a pretty typical phenomenon. There’s probably transgender people in most families, somewhere around the line. Usually exhibits…

I don’t want to leave anything out - so I’m asking my lovely readers for some help:
Do you have any guidelines for non-trans people asking trans people trans-related questions?
Is it ever appropriate? Are some questions appropriate but some always off-limits? Are there phrasing issues
UPDATE: thanks guys. The piece is submitted. :)
Anonymous asked: I have noticed at my university that there are a large number of men who in a queer setting would certainly be "assumed trans" or get read as trans or whatever (I agree with you that the whole idea is ridiculous). But yes, many short/small/skinny guys who are 5'6" and under. Many don't have much facial hair. Many have feminine facial features. Lots of hipster-y boys, well...

Possibly problematic attractions to trans men
Amos Mac recently interviewed some non-trans guys who have been mistaken as trans men. (Read the interviews in full here.) There was one instance when one of these cis men was read as trans in a semi-sexual situation and the person who had mistaken him for trans was actually upset to learn that he wasn’t. I’m going to talk about that now and I’m going to throw a little warning...

Anonymous asked: hi sebastian! i was just wondering, have you ever heard of XX male syndrome? apparently there are some men who are born with two X chromosomes but are cis male physically. i thought that was kind of a cool thing to hear about, not to mention a clever response to the "you'll never be a real man because your DNA is female" argument.
