I want to hear from you
Inspired by my boss, who works with schools for a living, I want to do a big piece on what schools could and should be doing better for their trans students. I have a sense of this, but honestly, I came out and transitioned in college, so I could really use the help of those trans* people who came out or are coming out in high school or younger! Please email me with your stories or general...

– Kinsey was a smart dude. This was written in 1948 and while it focuses on sexuality specifically, he also clearly suggests that this concept of a continuum is applicable to all natural things.

How about some summer mixes from yours truly?
Summer is officially here in Western Mass. Sam Adams Summer Ale is in the coolers at the package store next to my house. There’s a pitcher of iced tea in our fridge. Bikes are out. So are mosquitos. It hit 90 degrees yesterday. Swimming holes are packed. And my first summer mix is complete. It’s almost perfect in my opinion. The tracks are almost entirely brand new songs. I thought about actually...

My identity and how it fits into U.S. culture
As you might remember, I was recently asked to submit a personal narrative and photo for an exhibit on U.S. culture and identity at the Universidad de Caldas in Colombia. The prompt was “Describe your identity and how it fits within U.S. culture.” Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about how closely I resemble the normative American guy. I’m straight, white, have no physical...

xxboyreblogs: This is actually a really powerful video about Kye Allums and his mother. It is sad for sure. The update in the story is that Kye has decided to not return to the team next season. He’s suffered a great deal of concussions and has also had to delay medical transition in order to be eligible to play, though he doesn’t cite either reason specifically for his...

babeland: In every part of the world, men and women are persecuted and attacked because of who they are or whom they love. Homophobia, transphobia and the brutal hostility associated with them are often rooted in a lack of understanding of what it actually means to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT). So to combat this terrible scourge and break the cycle of fear and violence, we...

drabbling--on asked: I don't know that much about transgender, so I want to ask this: what is the difference between a cis man/woman and a trans man/woman?

I hope this really doesn't come off as rude. Not trying to be, I'm just ignorant and wish to learn.

A quick note on pronoun usage
It is inaccurate to refer to a trans person with their non-preferred pronoun when talking about them pre-transition. Unless the trans person specifically requests otherwise. That is, if you were to talk about my history in high school, you would use male pronouns, even though I had not yet transitioned. This is because most trans people believe that though we were perceived to be a different...

Anonymous asked: in the media, why do they always use female pronouns when referring to trans men in the past? without even knowing if that is okay! for example, i do not identify as having ever been a woman, so using female pronouns in the past to refer to me would be problematic. the media does it for all trans folk regardless..

Seattle Mayor: City Should Start Paying for...
by Dominic Holden (posted at The Stranger) When most of the city’s approximately 10,000 employees seek mental health care, steroid treatments, or a variety of other services, they don’t need to prove medical necessity to be covered under the city’s employee benefits plan. But once an employee has been classified by the city’s insurance carrier as transgender, those...

So I just saw that this list has been reposted on Tumblr and has over 1,000 notes, which is great. But I wrote it (it’s originally posted at Autostraddle) and the intro to it is also really important. Here is an excerpt: There is a lot of curiosity about people who are atypical. Being trans seems to draw out a kind of curiosity similar to what Dr. Brennan displayed in her interactions with...
