"Transgender people are just normal people in most ways, but nature loves diversity."

NCTE Executive Director Mara Keisling on the MSNBC special “Transgender in America” which featured Keisling as well as Kate Bornstein and others.

Autostraddle did a great piece on the special (which was actually very well done, by the way) here.

"‘There are no safe spaces for them, no resources for them, no places for them to go and just be themselves,’ says Woods, who is herself transgender. She added that until there is a place for transgender women—especially women of color—in our society, they will be forced to live on the margins and be vulnerable to violence."

Murder of transgender woman Brandy Martell raises concerns about hate crime

I try to avoid posting about transphobia and violence on here but this is an important reminder of the dangers trans people, particularly trans women, and particularly those of color, continue to face, and the sources of this violence.

This quote is from Tiffany Woods, director of TransVision Center, where the victim of this hate crime worked. Woods is absolutely correct. Living in the margins of society leaves people vulnerable to violence.

I hope that this is prosecuted as a hate crime, but I also hope that stories like this get more publicity so people outside trans communities wake up and realize the harm that comes from the “tranny” jokes and ignorance and the othering of trans ppl that are pervasive across mainstream America.

» TRANS COUCHSURFING NETWORK

transcouchnetwork:

Hi! I just started a tumblr, the Transgender Couchsurfing Network.  After seeing dozens of posts come across my dash about displaced or homeless trans people needing places to crash, I decided that there had to be a way to organize these posts somehow, and to put those in need in contact with those willing to lend a hand.  If you’re trans and need a place to stay, or if you have a couch or floor or spare bedroom available for someone in need, I urge you to reblog this post, follow the blog, and get the word out.  Everything is still under heavy construction, but the more people that see and hear about this blog, the more people will be able to benefit from it!  I know that there are so many people here on tumblr who are in need of a place to stay for a night or two, and I also know how many amazing, wonderful people would be willing to host someone and help out a trans person in need.  We all know what a huge problem unemployment and homelessness are for trans people (especially TPOC and trans women) — even a place to stay for a night can make the biggest difference!  So PLEASE, even if you can’t offer up your couch, REBLOG AND SIGNAL BOOST.  I really, really think that this is something that could help a lot of people, and I would LOVE to see this spammed all over my dash and the dashes of all of my lovely followers!!

From IN THE LIFE

Becoming Me (Full Episode) 20th Season | 2012

Eight families with transgender and gender non-conforming children ranging in ages from 5 to 25 share their stories. With the healthy development of their children at stake, parents must confront binary perceptions of gender, widespread transphobia and controversial parenting decisions.

On April 3, 2012 we held an online discussion in the comments section below. In The Life Media Staff Producer Kathryn Morrison was online and available to respond to questions and comments. She was joined by PFLAG’s Howard County, MD Transgender Network Coordinator Catherine Hyde, Gender Spectrum Director of Education and Training Joel Baum, and author of the book, “Gender Born, Gender Made,” Developmental and Clinical Psychologist Diane Ehrensaft. Continue the discussion by sharing your own experiences and comments.
